Services were Thursday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Joe was born April 13, 1920, near Mapleton, the son of Herman Julius Jessen and Alice (Taylor) Jessen. He attended country school in Crawford County and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1938. Read More	MAPLETON, Iowa -- Joseph Herman Jessen, 81, of Mapleton died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. Services were Thursday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Joe was born April 13, 1920, near Mapleton, the son of Herman Julius Jessen and Alice (Taylor) Jessen. He attended country school in Crawford County and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1938. After graduation he farmed with his father in Crawford County. On Jan. 31, 1948, Joe was united in marriage to Mary Jean Gilkerson at the Methodist-Episcopal Church in Magnolia, Iowa. They farmed in the Mapleton area and were in partnership with Theodore and Louise Schoenjahn for more than 30 years. Joe enjoyed farming, especially feeding cattle. In 1977, they moved into Mapleton, but Joe continued farming the Schoenjahn farm and the Jessen home farm. Joe liked to travel, and the family enjoyed many happy summer automobile trips. In later years, Joe loved to travel by air. He also enjoyed public speaking and announced parades and bingo games. Joe was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and served as chairman of the administrative board. He was a 50-year member of Quarry Lodge 404, where he served as Worshipful Master. He also conducted Masonic funeral services for his lodge and neighboring lodges. At the time of his death, he was a member of Vesper Lodge 223 in Onawa, Iowa. He was a 32nd Degree member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J. Temple and a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Sioux City. He was also a member of the Abu Bekr White Horse Patrol. Those survivors left to cherish Joe's memory include Mary Jean, his wife of 53 years; a son and his wife, Robert Joseph and Mary Jo of Onawa; a daughter and her husband, Karen Jean and Bernie Beaver of South Sioux City; two granddaughters, Kacee Ann Hahn and Stephanie Anne Jessen; a grandson, Nicholas Robert Jessen; a sister and her husband, Hazel and Lloyd Hansen of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Doris Sutton of Denver, Colo., Billie Gilkerson of Bussey, Iowa, and Dorothy Jessen of Schleswig, Iowa; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles; and a niece.
