Dec 16, 1940 - Carroll Daily Herald - Joseph Heue, 79, retired brick mason and general contractor, died at his home, 215 South Walnut Street, at 7:10 p.m. Saturday after an illness of several months. His condition had been critical for six days prior to his death, which claimed him at the age of 79 years. With the exception of one son, Frank Heue of Mallard, who is ill, all of his children were at his bedside when he passed away. Funeral services will be at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at SS. Peter and Paul's Church, with the Rev. L. Schenkelberg offering the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, and pallbearers will be Theodore Dirkx, T.J. Kerwin, A.A. Wiedemeier, John Schon, Clarence Baumhover and Frank Beiter. The body is resting at the family home until the time of the rites, having been returned there from the Dietrich Funeral Home Sunday afternoon. Mr. Heue, a resident of Carroll County for fifty-nine years, was born in Essento, Westphalia, Germany, June 29 1861. He was one of a family of ten children, all of whom preceded him in death with the exception of one brother, Henry Heue, three years his senior, who still lives in Germany. When he was twenty years old, Mr. Heue came to the United States and located in the country northwest of Carroll. Having attended school in his native land, he was a pupil of the late John Schachtner, during the winter term, in order to learn the English language. He attended a rural school several miles north of Carroll. Taking up the trade of a brick mason, general contractor and builder, Mr. Heue built the first chuch at Mt. Carmel. Among Carroll structures on which he worked were the east wing of the north public grde school and the Nockels Clothing Store. He continued at his occupation until he retirement 10 years ago. Feb 9, 1891, Mr. Heue was married to Miss Magdalene Rust of Carroll, the ceremony taking place at Ss. Peter and Paul's church here. Mr and Mrs Heue established their home in the residence on South Walnut Street where they have resided ever since. Surviving with his wife are 7 children: Henry Heue, Carroll; Joseph Heue, at home; Mrs Lawrence Augustine (Marie), Hastings, MN; Frank Heue, Mallard; Mrs Leonard Spaen (Adelaide), Carroll; John Heue, Detroit, MI; and sister M. Jolene (Genevieve), Durant, WI. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and his brother, Henry Heue. Mr. Heue was preceded in death by two sons and one daughter: Gerald, who died at the age of 11 months; Anna, three and one half years; and Anton, who died April 2, 1937.
