Serving a life term in the Ohio Penitentiary, Hicks died Friday in the prison hospital after an appendix operation. Hicks was convicted in Allen County Common Pleas Court on Feb. 14, 1948, of first degree murder as a result of shooting his former wife, Myrtle, Sept. 19, 1947, in the Sportsman's Grill, 36 Public Square. She was a waitress there at the time. Born in Floyd County, Ky., Hicks had lived in the Alger and Lima areas since childhood. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Nancy Hicks, Alger; three sons, James, Bluffton; Richard, Elida, and Robert, 540 Michael Ave.; three brothers, Henry, Kenton; High, Alger, and George, Route 1, Alger; a sister, Mrs. Norsey Riser, Patterson, Ohio, and five grandchildren.
