After an illness which dates from a year or more ago, Joseph Shipley passed away at his home on east Main street last Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held under the auspices of John W. Vance Post, G. A. R., Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. church, Rev. O. Eggleston of Ewing conducting the services. Interment was made at Union cemetery. Joseph Shipley was born in Warwick, England, Dec. 3, 1838. When a boy of three he came to the United States with his father and spent his boyhood days at Fall River, Massachusetts. When a young man he came to Nebraska and enlisted at Omaha in 1861 in Co. E, First Nebraska Infantry. He took part in the campaigns of Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson and participated in the battle of Shiloh with General Lew Wallace's corps. In January, 1864, he re-enlisted and was transfered to the cavalry, spending the remainder of his army life fighting Indians on the plains. He was honorably discharged from the service July 1, 1866. The same year he took a homestead in Cuming county, where he lived until he came to Madison county nineteen years ago. He was married in 1868 to Mary Shriver of Kentland, Ind., and to this union were born six children. Several years ago he left the farm near Meadow Grove and had since made his home in Battle Creek. Mr. Shipley always took a deep interest in politics and during his residence in Cuming county he served as county supervisor for several years and was elected state representative of that county in 1890. As a private citizen he commanded the highest respect and in the home he was all that could be desired in a husband and father. Deceased is survived by a wife and four children, John Shipley, Mrs. F. L. Crowley and Mrs. Will Jackson of this place, and Mrs. Ella Cummins of Great Falls, Montana. There are sixteen grandchildren.
