His father was an early settler of Gilmanton (History of Gilmanton, Lancaster) and lived near the so called Huckins Brooks, site later where Gilmanton Academy was built. He was a soldier in the Rev. War. Joseph Jr. resided in Nottingham and then Gilmanton and came late in life to Barnstead where he died. He was a farmer and a joiner. He was perhaps married three times, 3rd wife being Sarah Merrill, nee Glines, a widow. She may have been of Barnstead as they came there after the marriage in 1791 and after the death of wife Polly Kelley who died that same year. (Robert Huckins of the Dover Combination, Hardon) #14 Joseph Huckins, joiner, born Durham 6.30.1736, married first, about 1758, Mary Kelly, daughter of Holdrich and Hannah (Whitaker) Kelly, who was born Stratham 4.17.1733 and died at Gilmanton 3.7.1791; and secondly on 5.8.1791 (town records) married Sarah (Glines) Merrill, widow of Gilmanton. Joseph died at Barnstead 4.3.1819 and was buried in the Merrill bury-ground at Barnstead near Seward's Hill, on the Province Road (Jewett's Barnstead History, p 119). His will dated 5.11.1815 and proved 4.26.1819 mentions wife Sarah, all his children except son Stephen who was prior deceased, and Mary Huckins, daughter of his son Samuel who was also prior deceased (Strafford Probate Records Vol 23, p 53). Joseph was of Nottingham 1762 and in 1770 bought 200 acres at Gilmanton parts of lot 5 and 6 Upper Gore (Strafford Deeds, vol 7 pg 66.) He had land with his brother Benjamin Huckins. They each sold their land and Benjamin went to New Hampton NH and was named in a deed of the estate of his father Joseph Sr. along with his brother Joseph Jr. His brother Benjamin was still in New Hampton in 1790 when he deeded land and in 1795 and in 1804 when he again deeded land. Part of this land was that which he held with his brother Joseph Jr from his father's estate. (History and Genealogy of Barnstead Early Families, Stuart Merrill, 1799, pg 172) Joseph Huckins had Lot #9, 1st Division in 1810, removed to Lot#89, 2nd Div, located above the Parkey place and was buried there. He was a soldier in the French and Indian War and was at Crown Point in the Rev. War. This source says Joseph Jr. was born 1739 (other sources 1736) and died 1819, wife Susannah, wife Mary Kelley, wife Sarah Merrill. (Joseph Sr. had a wife Susannah, widow of Thomas Piper Jr.). Joseph and Joseph Jr. and Benjamin Huckins signed the Association Test in Gilmanton NH. Joseph Sr. sold his land Upper Gore NW Range, Lot #5, to Joseph Jr., witness Benjamin Huckins, his brother, (Deeds Vol 7, pg 67, 1784) Children of Joseph and Mary "Polly" Kelley: Margery (1759-1838) married Samuel Plaisted 1781 and resided New Hampton NH. Stephen (1760-1780) died at West Point NY John (1762-1810 married Hannah Mudgett 1784 and resided Gilmanton and later Parsonfield, Maine Joseph III (1764-1847) married Sally Warren and resided Parsonfield, Maine. Eunice (1769-1925 married Nicholas Gilman 1790 and Benjamin Guernsey and resided Effingham, NH Samuel (1771-1799) married Patience Spencer and resided Gilmanton and later Walden Vermont where he died, guardianship to mother Patricia Huckins Gear of Barrington NH. Sarah (1773-1847) married George K. Seward and resided Barnstead NH and Milton Massachusetts where she died. There was perhaps also a daughter Mary born 1766. History of Barnstead 1727-18XX), Joseph Huckins was buried Morrill (Merrill) Burying ground near Seward's Hill. The Huckins-Morrill burying ground is listed in the New Hampshire Old Graveyard Assn as being on Province Road, Barnstead- #106 which maps to Parkey Road (these maps are not always accurate however Joseph Huckins Jr. lived above the Parkey family in source above). The cemetery is also referred to as the Merrill Burying Ground in New Hampshire Colonial Graves and described as Seward's Hill, Barnstead. There were no public burying grounds in Barnstead up to 1850 and its first settlers and immediate descendants were laid to rest in the fields and many were plowed over (History of Barnstead, pg 228).
