At 96 years of age, Ivan was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Gladish, mother of Barbara Anreason, Carol Parry and Shirley Gere and his beloved wife of 55 years, Gladys Simon, mother of the late Thomas Mandley, Edith McArdle and David Mandley. Ivan Mandley was born Aug. 19, 1902, in Shelburne, Ontario, Canada. His family settled in Chelan Falls, where Ivan and his three brothers, Kenneth, Wilfred and Harold worked in their Uncle George Brown's orchard earning 5 cents an hour. At 17, Ivan decided to go to Alaska. With $5 in his pocket, he worked on a steamship to pay for his passage to Anchorage. There he got a job laying telephone and telegraph cable for the expanding railroad. In his memoirs Ivan wrote that "his summer in Alaska was a wonderful experience for a boy." Ivan returned home to his family in Chelan Falls and graduated from Chelan High School, the class president. After school, Ivan worked as a mechanic repairing machinery in the orchard industry. He then studied to become an electrician and worked for the Washington Water Power Co., and became one of the first operators of the Chelan Falls hydroelectric plant. It was at that time he married Beatrice Gladish and had three daughters. Beatrice tragically died in 1932. In 1934, Ivan met Gladys Simon at a Chelan dance and one year later they were married. By this time Ivan had become an electrical engineer and was asked to work on the Coulee Dam project. He installed three generators at Coulee and then went to Kodiak, Alaska, to install a generator at a steamplant there. In 1947 Ivan started the Mandley Refrigeration Co. in Wenatchee primarily to design and install cold storage warehouses for the fruit growers in the region. With the exception of a four-year period when Ivan was the assistant superintendent of the Rock Island Dam, Ivan owned and operated Mandley Refrigeration until finally selling it for the second time when he was 78 years old. For Ivan, work was his vocation, his hobby, his life. Few men could meet the high standards Ivan set for himself. He was a perfectionist; the quality of the job always took priority over the compensation. In his retirement, Ivan continued to consult on refrigeration projects, build clocks in his workshop, and enjoy good health until his final days. He was a man whose word was golden and whose actions were guided by the golden rule. Five children, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 17-great-grandchildren survive him. Ivan was a longtime supporter of the Mentally Retarded, the local Elks and Lions clubs, the IBEW, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers Inc. Arrangements are by Jones and Jones Funeral Directors of Wenatchee.
