Description	:	Joseph “Joe” Rexwinkel, 95, of Orange City, IA, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 18, 2015, at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton, IA. Pastor Scott Bonestroo will officiate. Private interment will be held in Nassau Township Cemetery, rural Alton, prior to the service with military honors provided by the Floyd American Legion Post 200 of Alton. Rexwinkel was born April 15, 1920, on the family farm in Nassau Township in Sioux County, rural Orange City, the son of John and Alice (Beltman) Rexwinkel. He was raised on the farm and graduated from Alton High School in 1938. Joe served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 during WWII. He was stationed in New Guinea and later in the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for special service in the Personnel Department in the Headquarters’ Office of the Commanding General of the Far East Air Forces (CRTC). He was honorably discharged. After returning to the States, he became a member of the Floyd American Legion Post 200 in Alton; which he had been a member of for the past 69 years. Joe was united in marriage to Bertha Van Zanten on September 12, 1946, in Ireton, IA. They made their home in Alton. Joe was involved in agri-business for over 50 years. For 30 years, he was employed by the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Alton, with a branch elevator in Carnes, IA, and lumber yards in both Alton and Orange City. For 20 of those years, he was the general manager of the Co-op. In 1990, they moved to Orange City. In December 2004, they became residents of the Heritage House Nursing Home. Bertha passed away June 14, 2008. Joe was a lifetime member of the Alton Reformed Church where he served on the consistory both as an elder and deacon. In earlier years, he and his wife were youth sponsors and Sunday school teachers. Joe also served as Sunday school superintendent. He was a member of the men’s chorus and quartet, as well as the mixed quartet. Joe was active in many community affairs. He served on the Alton town council both as a councilman and the mayor. He was a member of the Sioux County School board, a board member of the Area IV Education Agency during the transition years, and also a former member of the Alton Savings Bank Board of Directors. Additionally, he served on many other boards and committees, both locally and regionally. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in all of their activities. Survivors include a son, John and his wife Lorene of Le Mars, IA; 3 grandchildren: Jill Eberle and her husband Dan of Bloomington, IL; Jane Arnold and her husband Darrin of Remsen, IA; and Dan Rexwinkel and his wife Lori of Akron, IA; 6 great grandchildren: Jackson and Ethan Eberle; Zach and Meredith Arnold; and Lauren and Kaylee Rexwinkel; a brother, Henry Rexwinkel of Orange City; a sister, Alma Noe of Hawarden. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bertha; a daughter, Barbara; and a brother-in-law, Ivan Noe. [Courtesy: Carlsen Funeral Homes]
