Description	:	OBIT: J. J. Roberts, one of Eddyville's oldest settlers, passed away at his home on North Second street on Friday, March 17th, 1916, after several months of suffering. The funeral services were held at the Christian church at one o'clock Sunday afternoon, an unusually large crowd being present to pay their last respects to the departed. The remains were laid to rest in Highland cemetery. The following is the obituary, as read at the funeral services: Joseph J. Roberts was born February 7th, 1840, in Henry county, Iowa, and died March 17th, 1916, at Eddyville, Iowa, aged 76 years, one month and 10 days. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Steele December 6, 1860. To this union eight children were born, five boys and five girls. He is preceded in death by his wife and three children. Five children, eight grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren survive. The surviving children are Mrs. Nora Emanuel of Eddyville, Iowa; J. R Roberts of Eddyville, Iowa; Mrs. Abbie Wehril (sic; correct surname is Wehrli) of Benson, Nebraska; Ed Roberts of White Salmon, Washington, and Elbert Roberts of Reedville, Oregon; also two brothers William and Charles of California. His entire life has been passed in the vicinity of Eddyville. Mr. Roberts enlisted in Co. D, 36th Iowa Regiment, August 13th, 1862, in the War of the Rebellion, and was discharged for disability January 27th, 1863, at St. Louis, Missouri. For years Mr. Roberts was one of the familiar figures of this place, and he was universally known and liked for his jolly and friendly disposition, so he will be missed by many friends.
