Joseph was raised in Van Buren County, Iowa along with his sisters Esther, Sarah and Emma Swiers. Joseph married Melvina Frances Jackson, his first cousin, and daughter of Joseph Jackson and Catherine Ann Emerick, natives of Ohio. Joseph and Melvina were married in 1881 in Iowa. Joseph married Melvina Frances Jackson, his first cousin, and daughter of Joseph Jackson and Catherine Ann Emerick, natives of Ohio. Joseph and Melvina were married in 1881 in Iowa. Joseph was a life-time farmer in Van Buren County. Obituary--source unknown "81 Year Old Man Who Spent Life on One Farm is Survived by Foster Son" "Funeral service for Joseph Swiers, who died at his home near Leandro, at noon Saturday, were held at the Leandro Methodist church Monday afternoon in charge of the Rev W S Moore. Burial was at the Valentine Cemetery. "Mr Swiers, who was 81 years old, was born on the farm where he died. Witn the exception of one year, he had spent his entire life on the same place. He was married to Melvina Jackson in 1881. One daughter, Myrtle, died in 1889. His wife died in 1909. Their other daughter, Mrs Myrtes Mort, and baby daughter died in 1919. "Mr Swiers is survived by a foster son, W L Swiers of Leandro."
