Vavra was born at Caslor, Czechoslovakia, on July 8, 1872, and died Feb. 16, 1960, at the age of 87. He came to the United States at the age of 15, with his parents, and settled in the vicinity of Nimburg. He worked for the Burlington railroad, first as a laborer and then as a section foreman, retiring in 1938 after 50 years of service. On January 29, 1902 he was united in marriage to Anna Nigrin who preceded him in death, Sept. 15, 1953. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive. They are two sons, George of Chicago, Ill. and Edward of Omaha; four daughters, Mrs. Rose Wilcox and Mrs. Lydia Zizka of Prague, Mrs. Ethel Sekera and Mrs. Marie Redding of Omaha. Other survivors are 10 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Anton Marushak of David City and Mrs. Simon Kulhanek of Brainard. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon Feb. 20, at the National Hall in Prague. Vocalists were Frederick and Raymond Houfek accompanied by Mrs. Marjorie Proett on the piano. Clergy man were Rev. Donald Proett and Rev. Milous Repka. Interment was in the National cemetery at Prague. Pallbearers were James Havelka, Frank Houfek, James Kaspar,Sr., Joe Kliment, Anton Petrzelka and Adolph Kaspar. Kucera Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
