Bowed with the weight of years, Mr. Joseph Versell closed a long and eventful career at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Josephine Williams in Fortuna on Monday night at 8:30, in his 97th year. His great age had prepared the family for the sad event but that in no wise lessened the loss or softened the shock to his family. Arrangements were made for the funeral at one o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. Pastor Derby of the Methodist chruch spoke words of solace to the bereaved ones at the home, after which the funeral cortege moved slowly to Hydesville where lay the body of his wife, who preceded him in death in 1902 at a ripe old age. Joseph Versell was born in Austria on June 18th, 1809, but when an infant, taken to Swizterland and there raised. About 1836, he came to America and settled down in Pennsylvania. Shortly afterwards, attention was called of the public land in Illinois and Mr. Versell walked the whole distance to take a homestead. About 1839, he returned to Pennsylvania and was there married to Catharine Gordon, with whom he went to Mercer County, Illinois. Records show that he was finally and fully naturalized as an American citizen in 1846. He lost his first wife and about 1862, was married again to Mrs. Doris Cattenburg. Two children were born to them, Joseph Versell of Lower Lake, and Mrs. Josephine Williams, wife of our supervisor, here in Fortuna. Along in 1880, he came to California and settled near Hydesville. Mr. Versell once walked from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Washington D.C., in the pre-railroad days. This love of walking was always strong with him and even when he was 85 years old, he sometimes walked to Fortuna, to visit with his daughter and never liked the idea of our supervisor hitching up to take him home. He prefered to walk. He came from a long lived race, each of the 10 children born to his parents reached a venerable age, all of his brothers lived to be over 90, one sister died at the age of 88 and there is another still alive in this state who has seen 85 summers.
