In April 1893 he emigrated with his parents and siblings to the "Dutch" Platte area in Charles Mix County, located in the southeastern part of South Dakota, where he lived most of his life, except for some years in California. In June 1900 Jochem (24 years old, born in June 1876 in the Netherlands, farm laborer, his father Johannes Groen (61 , September 1839, Netherlands, farmer), mother Hankje (58, March 1842, Netherlands, mother of 7 living children), his siblings Feike (20, Mei 1880, Netherlands, farm laborer) and Reinder (17, Netherlands, October 1882, farm laborer) were living on a rented farm in Signal Township, which borders the River Missouri, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. They all immigrated in 1893. In March 1905 he married in Castalia Township, near Platte, Charles Mix County, to Elizabeth Woudstra and they lived in Signal Township near Platte. In April 1910 Joe Groen (34 years old, born in Holland, immigrated in 1893, farmer), his wife Elizabeth (25, Holland, mother of 4 living children), their children Etta (4, South Dakota), Anna (3, South Dakota), Ida (2, South Dakota) and Hans (0, South Dakota) were living on a rented farm in Forbes Township , located a few miles north of Platte, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. In January 1920 Joseph Groen (43, farmer), his wife Elizabeth Groen (37), their children Hattie (13), Anna (12), Edith (11), Hans (10, South Dakota), Margaret (7, South Dakota), John (5, South Dakota) and Gertie (3, South Dakota) were living on a rented farm in Lake George Township, located a few miles northwest of Platte, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. In February 1921 his wife Elizabeth Woudstra Groen died at the age of 38 years in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, leaving him with seven or eight children. The names of their children are Hattie (Plooster), Anna (Westra), Edith (Monze), Hans, Margaret (Carter), John, Gertrude (De Raad), Elizabeth (Betty Kuipers) and Albert, who died in 1920 in infancy. In April 1930 Joseph Groen (54, widower, farmer), his children Hattie (22), Anna (21), Edith (20), Hans (18), Margaret (16), John (15) and Gertrude (12) were living on a rented farm in Forbes Township, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. In September 1956 Joseph Groen died at the age of 80 years in Los Angeles County, California. His children lived in 2008 in Platte (South Dakota), California, Denver, Colorado and Oklahoma.
