Brown from the Frederick News of Tuesday, December 7, 1993: "Mr. Joseph K. Brown, 71, of 15423 Norwood Avenue, Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, died Monday, December 6, at the Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He was in failing health for the past three months. He was the husband of Margaret U. Small Brown, to whom he was married since January, 1948. They lived on Norwood Avenue for the past 40 years. Born August 12, 1922 in Lantz, he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Linnie Wilhide Brown. Mr. Brown graduated in 1939 from Thurmont High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U. S. Army 86th infantry in the European and South Pacific theaters. Following his discharge from the service, he owned and operated a general store and post office in Lantz. He sold the store in 1947. In September, 1950, he was appointed postmaster of the Blue Ridge Summit Post Office and held that position until retiring in December, 1978. Mr. Brown was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Blue Ridge Summit. He served as junior warden and as vesteryman for many years in the church. He also was a member of the AARP and a life member of the Blue Ridge Summit Volunteer Fire Company. He was a past member of the National League of Postmasters, the National Association of Postmasters and the Blue Ridge Summit Lions Club. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Michael K. Brown, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Stacey G. Thorne, of Baltimore; one granddaughter, Emily Samantha Thorne, of Baltimore; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by one sister, Madlyn R. Bailey,who died in 1986, and one brother, Clyde W. Brown, who died in 1978.Funeral services will be Thursday, December 9, at 11 a.m. in the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Blue Ridge Summit. The Rev. Edward S. Sykes will officiate. Interment will be in the Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the common room of the church. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, P. O. Box B, Blue Ridge Summit,Pennsylvania 17214 or to the Blue Ridge Mountain Ambulance and Rescue Squad, P. O. Box S, Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania 17214.
