Description	:	Joseph and Maria Kaltenborn left their home in Essen, Germany when they were 43 and 38 years of age respectively to come to America. They traveled aboard the Steamship Switzerland from Antwerp, Belgium and arrived in the port of New York on March 17, 1879 after 6 days at sea. Their children who made the trip with them were Herman Joseph, Jacob and Maria Anna, and Anna Katharina and Helena. Their children who made the trip with them were Herman Joseph, Jacob and Maria Anna, and Anna Katharina and Helena. When the Kaltenborns first came to Nebraska, they settled in the Olive Branch Precinct in Lancaster County which was near Crete, Nebraska. Magdalena Sophia was born in Lancaster County as was Anna Margaretta. Joseph, the father, was a cigar maker while they lived in the Crete area. Court records show that Joseph Kaltenborn Purchased a farm near St. Stephens in 1884. There is a possibility that they were influenced to move to the St. Stephens area by Father Lechleitner from Crete who celebrated the first Mass in the dugout at the Louis Schum farm in 1875. The farm on which the Kaltenborns resided is now owned by Ralph Kometscher. Joseph, in addition to being a farmer, was a carpenter and also followed that line of work. He did some repair work on the steeple of the old St. Stephens Church. The last two of Joseph and Maria's nine children were born in Nuckolls County where they settled near St. Stephens. They were Wilhelm and Maria Theresa. The Kaltenborn boys all left the Lawrence vicinity at an early age. Herman Joseph, settled at Waco, Nebraska and had 5 children: Jacob moved to California and had three children: Bill lived in the Martell area and had 3 children. The Kaltenborn girls ran a millinery store in Lawrence. According to an old issue of the Locomotive, Helen opened her store in 1906. For a time some of the girls operated a millinery in Lincoln. They all married local young men Maria Anna married Frank Dolnicek and they had 11 children. Anna Katharina married George Descher and they had 5 children. Helena married Wm. Borin and they had 2 sons. Magdalina Sophia, married James Doran and they had 2 boys. Anna Margaretta married George Kroening and they had 4 children. Maria Theresa, married Dean Norris and they had 2 sons. Possibly the most famous of Joseph & Maria's descendants is the grandson of their oldest child Herman Joseph. Howard Stanley Kaltenborn is listed in Who's Who in 1966 as an economist in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. His father was Ernest son of Herman Joseph. Joseph became a naturalized citizen in 1887 and his family automatically became citizens due to his actions as head of the household. He died in 1899 and Maria died in November of 1900. Both are buried in the St. Stephen's Cemetery.
