Description	:	Joseph was from Alsace Lorraine, France. His first wife was apparently Annie Gayhart (from death certificate of his daughter Katherine, and 1925 census entry of his daughter Anna). According to his 1900 census entry he immigrated in 1847. The obituary of his daughter Anna seems to support this, when it says her parents came to this country soon after she was born, they lived a few years in Ohio and came west in 1852 and settled on a farm in the southern part of Benton county, adjoining the Amana colony. She had previously been married to Charles/Karl Kunz and had several children born in Bohemia and Wisconsin. The 1856, 1860 and 1880 censuses show them in Lenox township, Iowa County. From his death certificate: Father's Name John Kuen Mother's Name Mary Kuntz From the biographical sketch of his brother Mathias Kuen: MATHIAS KUEN, a retired farmer living in Norway, Benton county, Iowa, has been identified with this state for more than half a century. He was born in Alsace, France, March 6, 1818, a son of John Kuen, a representative of an old French family. John Kuen was a large land owner and by trade was a shoemaker. He was born in 1781 and died in 1841. He married Mary Ann Butz, an only child, who belonged to a family of long standing in France. Both John Kuen and his wife were well educated, and their religion was that of the Catholic church. They were the parents of ten children, five of whom came to the United States, and of this large family Mathias is the only survivor. (History of Benton County, Iowa, The Lewis Publishing Company, 1910, page 571) In this cemetery, Catharine Kuen (1828 - 1904) is his sister.
