Joseph St. Pierre was born on November 27, 1843 in Vermont or New Hampshire. He moved to St. Anne, Kankakee County, Illinois with his family where he married Constance Labrie. She was born on February 1, 1844 at St. George, Henryville, Quebec, the first of 12 children born to Marcelle and Constance (Lemieux) Labrie. The family had moved to St. Anne, Ill. in 1848. Joseph was the only member of his family to change his name to St. Peter. His brother, Thomas, lived at Currie, Minn. and later on in life lived with his daughters at Turton where he passed away on January 28, 1925. Eight children were born to this marriage: LaVina (Mrs. Frank Remily), Clara (Mrs. Fred Remily), Ovila, Domino, Odila (Della), Anita (Mrs. N.J. Remily), and two daughters who died young, Alma A. in 1886 at age one and Alma D. in 1889 at age two. They were first buried at Frankfort and then moved to Turton after Joseph's death. The family arrived in South Dakota in 1880 or 81 and settled on a farm three miles south and two miles west of Turton in Sumner Township. It took three days, three nights and three railroad cars to get them and all their belongings to Watertown. It was winter and George Labrie met them there and brought them to his home in a bobsled. It was a cold, long 50 mile ride. Three of Constance's brothers came with them to join other family members already here. Their first home in Sumner Township was a sod house, and as daughter Clara remembered, it was warm but dirty. The family's first permanent dwelling was built by Turton's foremost carpenter, Ferdinand Labrie. The lumber was hauled from Watertown to the site. Constance was one of the first midwives in the Turton area and delivered many babies. Upon retiring from farming, Joseph and Constance moved to Turton and lived with their daughter Anita, (Mrs. N.J. "Shorty" Remily) in the home where Bill Imm lives today. Joseph passed away on May 7, 1918 and Constance on January 30, 1925. Both are buried at Turton.
