Description	:	The Bartlett community was shocked Thursday morning to learn of the sudden death of J. L. Adkins, who passed away in his sleep early that morning. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Joseph Lee Adkins was born near David City, Nebraska, February 22, 1874, and died at his home near Bartlett on Thursday, November 9, 1939, at the age of 65 years, eight months and 18 days. Read More	The Bartlett community was shocked Thursday morning to learn of the sudden death of J. L. Adkins, who passed away in his sleep early that morning. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Joseph Lee Adkins was born near David City, Nebraska, February 22, 1874, and died at his home near Bartlett on Thursday, November 9, 1939, at the age of 65 years, eight months and 18 days. He spent his early boyhood in and around David City, coming to Boone county in 1898, where he worked as a farm hand until March 1900 when he was united in marriage to Nettie E. Sinnard and together they made a home of their own. In his early married life he joined the Methodist church at Albion and remained in this faith until his passing on. They lived in Boone county until March, 1929, when they moved to Wheeler county, where his loving wife passed away in February, 1937. Left to mourn his passing are his children, Alvin and Ira at home; Mrs. Edna Zabka of Albion; Lee of Shenandoah, Iowa; George of St. Edward; Sam and Clyde of Bartlett; eleven grandchildren; one brother Eugene of St. Paul, Minnesota; one sister, Mrs. Dell Rice of Denver, Colorado; besides many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the funeral chapel in Spalding Saturday afternoon, November 11, with Rev. C. E. Austin of the Bartlett Methodist church in charge. The text of the sermon was I Cor. 15:15, “Oh death, where is they sting”. A quartette composed of Keith and Geo. Sloane, Gladys Guff and Lillian Wyman sang “Going Down the Valley”, “The City Four-Square”, and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere”. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery at Albion.
