Read More	A Sad Affair. – On Thursday last there occurred in this county one of those sad and unfortunate tragedies which occasionally startle communities by their suddenness and horrible surroundings. On that day, a difficulty occurred between Mr. William Silvus and, an old and highly esteemed resident of Alexander township, and a neighbor of his, a young man named Lester Wines, in which the latter received his death-wound at the hands of the former. As the case has not yet undergone legal investigation, and as we wish to do strict justice towards all parties, we will simply give the version of the affair as stated to us by several reliable and disinterested gentlemen. It seems that Mr. Silvus, who is an old gentleman 70 odd years of age, rented a piece of his ground to Wines, who is a young man, some 27 years of age. In the division of the corn crop grown on the land thus rented, a difficulty occurred between the parties, and in the heat of passion Silvus stabbed Wines in the throat and neck with a pocket-knife, severing one of the main arteries and causing death in a very few moments. The affray had no witnesses save the parties engaged, we believe, and the body of Wines was not discovered or removed until some time after death had overtaken him. This fatal occurrence has cast a deep gloom over the community in which the parties resided, and is greatly deplored by all classes of our citizens. On Friday last Mr. Silvus was brought to this village in custody of the proper officers, and on the ground that the wound from which death resulted was inflicted in self-defense, he was released on $1,500 bail, to await the action of the next Grand Jury. Such is a correct a statement of the affair as we could obtain, and further comment at this time would be as unjust as injudicious. (Th Athens Messenger, Thursday, October 5, 1871)
