Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Platte. A Committal Service will follow at Bloomington Cemetery, rural Platte with military honors by Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115 of Platte. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Joseph Lindbergh Johnson was born on July 18, 1927 to Melvin and Margaret (Nelson) Johnson in Geddes, SD. He grew up in the area and was a 1948 graduate of Geddes High School. After serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 – 1953, during the Korean War, he returned home to farm. On June 18, 1961 he united in marriage to Laura Peterson at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church in rural Vermillion, SD. He farmed in the Geddes area until 1985, and then worked for the city of Geddes until 1998. In 1997 they moved to Platte, SD where Joe and Laura lived in and managed The Gentle Touch until the time of his death. Joe was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, belonged to the Farmer's Union and participated in bowling league all in the community of Platte. He enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Grateful for having shared in Joe's life: his wife of over 50 years, Laura Johnson of Platte, SD; their 4 children: Lori Smith of Ogden, UT, Lynda (Mike) Belt of Wayne, NE, Michael (Dawn) Johnson of Belle Fourche, SD and Mary (Tom) Espland of Sioux Falls, SD; 12 grandchildren: Joshua (Aubry) Smith, Dallas (Dorene) Johnson, Michaela Belt, Jamie Belt, Rylee Johnson, Aaron Smith, Tabitha Belt, Rebekah, Rachel and Joseph Espland, Andi Belt and Marlena Espland; a step grandson, Jeremy Sebade; 2 great-grandchildren: Savannah Jo Smith and Remington Jocelyn Johnson; 2 step great-grandchildren: Colton and Keaton Sebade; his brother, Norman Johnson of Sacramento, CA; his sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson of Geddes, SD; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Joe was preceded in death by: his parents, Melvin and Margaret Johnson; his brother, Clifford Johnson and sister-in-law, Joanne Johnson.
