Father Joseph Downing, one of the early settlers of Cedar county, passed from this world to a world of rest on Wednesday, December 9th, surrounded by his sorrowing wife and children. For several years, under repeated attacks of pneumonia, his health had been gradually giving way, until about a year ago, when he began to fail more rapidly and it soon became apparent to both himself and friends that he could not live very long. Although deeply attached to his family and friends and surrounded by all the comforts that make life worth living, he cheerfully accepted the inevitable and his last days were marked by a calm, uncomplaining resignation that testified more eloquently than words to the perfect peace within. At the early age of twenty he embraced religion and his life from that time on to its close was an exemplification of true Christianity. He was a man of unusual intellectual force and good judgment as well as probity of character, and was repeatedly urged to accept positions of honor and trust, but he preferred to remain in private life, faithfully discharging the humbler duties of citizenship, respected and esteemed by his neighbors and loved and honored by his family. Mr. Downing was born in Virginia July 30, 1820, and a year later removed to Indiana with his parents. He came to this county in 1842, and has been a resident of Linn township for nearly fifty years. By hard labor he accumulated considerable property. He was married Miss Catherine Andre in 1845, and to them were born ten children, five of whom, Mrs. Sarah Buchanan, Mrs. Lydia Fahn, of Grant City, Iowa, Jno P. and Odis Downing of Green county, Iowa, and D. A. Downing, of Tipton, lived to follow his remains to their last resting place in the hallowed and beautiful grounds of Clear Creek Cemetery, near the place where he spent the larger part of his life. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Hubbard of Mechanicsville, at the Clear Creek church at 10 a.m. Friday, the words spoken and a beautiful song service by the choir, contributing greatly to the comfort of the bereaved. The attendance was very large, and included many from considerable distances.
