Maryville Nodaway Democrat Newspaper Archives December 12, 1872 Page 1 Joseph Nicholas to Elisha Dixon, five acres in sw 9 64 37 - S135 Joseph Nicholas, who had been a citizen of Nodaway county since 1869, died at his home near Quitman, on Wednesday, January 22, and was buried by the Mason's at Quitman on Friday, January 24, Elder L.D. Poston, of Burlington Junction, preaching the funeral sermon. Joseph Nicholas was born November 5, 1826, in Vinton county Ohio, and died at his home January 22, 1890. The cause of his death was pneumonia, superinduced by la grippe. He was married Oct 20, 1847 to Miss Frances Dixon, of Vinton County, Ohio. From this union there were 12 children, 11 of whom, six girls and five boys are living and with the exception of one, were all present at the funeral. In 1849, Mr. Nicholas moved from Ohio to Peoria county, Illinois, remaining there until '52, when he removed to Stark County, same State from which place he came to this county. Wyoming Post Herald February 6, 1890 Fromt he last issue of the Post published at Burlington Junction, Nodaway County, Missouri, we learn of the deaht of Jospeh Nicholas and his daughter, Elmira, former residents of Essex Township in this county. Mr. Nicholas' death which occurred at his home 2 smiles south of Quitman on Wednesday, January 22, 1890, was the result of penumonia, superceded by influenza or la grippe. JosephNicholas was a native of Ohio, and was born November 5, 1826, in that part which is now Vinton county - then Jackson County. He was married to Miss Francis Dixon of the same county, in 1847. Twelve children were the issue of this union. Mrs. Nicholas died July 29, 1877. September 4, 1879, Mr. nicholas married his second wife Mrs. Emily S. Ralson, who died Feb 25, 1883. On May 15, 1884, Mr. Nicholas married for his third wife, Mrs Sarah Esther Chamberlain, who survives him. the funeral was conducted by Rev. E.L. Paston of the M.E. Church of Quitman, On Friday Jan. 24, and the masonic lodge administered the burial rite. Deceased became a member of the Free Masons at Wyoming in 1869, and the same year moved to Nodaway County, Missouri. On Saturday, January 25th, three days after her fathers death, Elmira died of the same ailment. She too was a native of Ohio, and was born Nov 29, 1848. Her funeral took place from the M.E. Church at Quitman, on Saturday, the 25th, the Rev. Mr. Paston officiating. The Burlington Junction Post, Saturday, May 21, 1904 Twenty Years ago, May 17, 1894 Joseph Nicholas of Green township and Mrs. Sarah E. Chamberlain were married in Maryville last Thursday.
