Hardy was born September 22, 1869 at Pendleton, Indiana and departed this life at the Stewart-Brown Memorial hospital Thursday morning, May 1st, at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 8 days. Read More	Joseph Orr Hardy, son of J.O. and Esther S. Hardy was born September 22, 1869 at Pendleton, Indiana and departed this life at the Stewart-Brown Memorial hospital Thursday morning, May 1st, at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 8 days. Having lost his father at an early age, and he being the eldest of the boys, the heavy responsibility of the family fell upon him. He made his first trip to Stratton in 1884, coming alone at the age of 15, to make arrangements for his mother and brothers to live on a homestead. The family then moved to Hitchcock County in the spring of 1885, driving a light wagon and pulled by a pair of 2-year-old heifers. Later he and his wife proved on a homestead of his own, which he still owns. On November 29, 1892 he and Mary Elizabeth Romine were united in marriage and one daughter and four sons came to bless this happy union. While a young man he became a member of the Church of Christ through the preaching of the gospel by the late L. S. Terry. Through the years he has been the source of aid and encouragement to a great number of gospel preachers and fellow Christians. After living on their homestead 43 years and children grown and living in homes of their own, they moved to an acreage 3 miles south of Loveland, Colo. Living there 22 years, the moved back to Stratton in 1954 to be near their children. He resided here until the time of his death. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife and children for he was always a kind, affectionate, thoughtful husband and father. The interest of his home and family were always foremost in his mind. He was also interested in community and civic affairs, having been a deacon and also elder in the church. He served on the school board, also county commissioner of Hitchcock County and helped organize one of the first Farmers Grain companies in Nebraska. He was always very thankful for his good long life, but expressed his wish often, to his children, if he could only live longer in order to care for his life companion of 66 years. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, his daughter Hetty Bedford and four sons: Lee, Clyde, and Frank of Stratton; and Ralph of Wauneta, Nebr. Thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One brother, Neil Hardy of Denver, Colorado, and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and brother, Erwin. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled. For God in his wisdom, has recalled This one his love has given; And though the body slumbers here, The Soul is safe in Heaven. Hardy were held in the Veterans Memorial Hall, May 3rd, 1958, at 2:30 p.m., Stratton, Nebraska. The ministers in charge were H.R. Thornill of Sidney and William F. Lemons of McCook. Mr. Hardy was 88 years, 7 months, 8 days old at the time of his death. Singers were a group from the College of York, Nebraska: Jim Flick, Charles Brenninger, Bob Lewis and Ron Griffith. Paull bearers were George Hardy, Earnest Frank, Bob Hardy, Eugene Jones, Lloyd Dahnke and Gordon Morthole. Internment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Stratton.
