Champ, 75, Redkey, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Fort Wayne. Born in Redkey on May 26, 1930, to Ralph and Lucille (Claycomb) Champ, he graduated from Gov. I.P. Gray High School in 1948. He was married to Virginia M. Cochran for 55 years. She survives. A journeyman bricklayer, he was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers Local No. 19, where he served as an officer for 20 years. He also owned and operated Champ's Monument for more than 30 years in Redkey. A member of the Redkey Church of the Nazarene, he worked with the Redkey youth baseball program for more than 30 years and managed the Eastern Indiana Baseball Team for 10 years. Memberships include charter member and past president of Redkey Chamber of Commerce, charter member of Historic Redkey, Inc., and Redkey Historian. Other survivors include two sons, Gregg Champ, Jamestown, Tenn., and Ted Champ, Redkey; two brothers, Gene Champ, Ridgeville, and Royce "Sonny" Champ, Redkey; two sisters, Mrs. Bob (Joyce) Fuller, Redkey, and Sandra Kennedy, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services are Saturday at 10 a.m. at M.J.S. Mortuaries-Redkey Chapel. Burial will be in the Claycomb Cemetery, north of Redkey. Visitation is Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to Redkey Church of the Nazarene.
