Description	:	Joe was the second born and eldest son of nine children born to French immigrants, Joseph and Helena (Clementz) Lecher. He was raised on a farm near Morris, Indiana. Catherine "Kate" Niehoff became his bride on 2 Jan 1889 when they were married in the village of Hamburg, Indiana. They made their home on a 50 acre farm nearby where they raised mostly corn. He was raised on a farm near Morris, Indiana. Catherine "Kate" Niehoff became his bride on 2 Jan 1889 when they were married in the village of Hamburg, Indiana. They made their home on a 50 acre farm nearby where they raised mostly corn. In addition, Joe had a small apple orchard on the property where he grew "the best Jonathan apples ever tasted," according to his granddaughter Frieda. Joe and Kate had four children Tillie, Minnie, Ida Marie and Clem. Only Minnie and Clem lived until adulthood. After losing part of his leg due to complications from poor circulation, Joe retired from farming and moved into a small house in Hamburg. Here the couple enjoyed the company of family, friends and neighbors. One of Joe's greatest joys was his grandchildren. He was a big tease and got quite a kick out of using his wooden leg to play pranks on them. Joe did a litte barbering on the side and once played a trick on a neighbor. He distracted the man by talking through the entire process, sending the man home with only half of his hair cut. Joe thought that was quite amusing. He lost his life in 1937 as a result of his circulatory problems. Granddaughter Frieda remembers seeing him in the hospital where she worked shortly before he died. He had two children and fourteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Anne's Catholic Church.
