Joe was born on March 4, 1912, in Madison, NE, to George and Frances (Kopp) Meister, the youngest of 18 children. His parents moved to the Gary, SD area in 1927, and he spent his formative years working with his siblings on the family farm. Joe was born on March 4, 1912, in Madison, NE, to George and Frances (Kopp) Meister, the youngest of 18 children. His parents moved to the Gary, SD area in 1927, and he spent his formative years working with his siblings on the family farm. He joined other family members to find work in the Detroit area, where he met and married Lillian (Peterson) in 1937. They moved back to Gary, SD, and ran a gas station and convenience store for 5 years. Joe held a variety of jobs, eventually working for, and retiring from Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI. Joe was a man of many talents and skills. He was accomplished carpenter and general handyman. He was a superb father and loving husband for 68 years. He and Lill spent many enjoyable hours playing games together and with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lill; his parents; and all of his siblings. He is survived by: son, David (Pat) of Cloquet, MN; daughter, Nancy (Art) Doty of Lansing, MI; 5 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. Wesley B. Emerson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Michigan Great Lakes Chapter, Capital Area Region, 5303 S. Cedar St., Building 1, Lansing, MI 48911, in memory of Joe Meister. ∼Father of Joseph P.: Georg Meister, born 28 Mar 1866 in Keer, close to Zell, North-East of Regensburg, Bavarian Forest, Germany. Mother: Frances Helmberger Kopp, born 1 Apr 1869 in St. Marys, Cameron, PA. Georg Meister, the half-brother of my Grandfather, immigrated 27 Apr 1896 with his wife, Anna Helmberger, and his four children (Katharina, Georg, Justin and Anna) to Petoskey, MI. Another child, Mary, was born in MI. His wife Anna died 1898. He got married again in 1901 with Frances Helmberger Kopp (she had six children with her first husband, John Helmberger: Michael, Johannes Baptist, Frances, Mary, Martin and Edward Helmberger). The children they had together are: Peter, Margaret, John F., Christine, Emil and Joseph P. 1911 and 1913 the two brothers of my Grandfather, Anton and Franz/Frank Meister, immigrated too, to Minneapolis, MN.
