Veteran Of The Mexican War Joseph Mellinger died last monday at his Cascade home. About 4o'clock Monday morning Joseph Mellinger died at his home in East Cascade after a lingering illness caused by old age and its attending infirmities. He was born in Shelby county, Ohio, February 3, 1820 and at the age of 18 years removed with his parents to Eagle Point, Wisconsin. When war was declared with Mexico, in 1846, Mr. Mellinger, then living in Ohio, inlisted as a private in Company K., 6th Regiment Infantry of that state, and served through the conflict, and was with the troops under Scott when the city of Mexico was captured. He was married January 22, 1853 to Hannah Grapes, who with seven children, six sons and one daughter, survive him. They lived near Worthington for a number of years, and in 1892 came to Cascade to reside. Mr. Mellinger was a quiet and inoffensive man and had many friends. The funeral occurred Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist church and was conducted by Rev. A. B. Curran, assisted by Revs. Hill, Williams, and Beatty. His children are as follows: Daniel born 1851, Cynthia born 1853, William born 1855, Lewis Marion born 1861, George born 1862, Samuel Mellinger also known as James Thomas Patterson born 1863, Daniel Almond Mellinger also known as Albert Mansfield Patterson born 1866 and Francis Everett born 1871. The name change story for the two sons: Daniel Almond Mellinger, this was his real name and changed to Albert Mansfield Patterson. Story is he and his brother Samuel Mellinger ( new name is James Thomas Patterson) got into a bar fight in Columbus Junction with an old prize fighter named Cap Gazelle and they thought they had killed him.
