Description	:	Joseph Reiner (most common spelling is Reiner; also known as Rhiner or Riner) was born 3 October 1842, reportedly near Bregenz, capital of Vorarlberg, the westernmost state of Austria. The city lies on the eastern shores of Lake Constance, between Switzerland in the west and Germany in the northwest. Joseph was a son of Joseph Anton and Anna May (Arker) Reiner who had eight children born in Austria, before coming to America: George deceased in Austria; Catherine, Joseph, Albert, Margaret, Antoine, William, and an infant which died at sea during the passage to America in 1852. After their arrival, the Reiner family settled near Richmond, within English River Township, Washington County, Iowa, on 40 acres of farm land purchased by the elder Mr. Reiner. Returning from service in the Civil War, the younger Joseph Reiner married, Miss Mary Ann Mathren (Mathern), April 21, 1867. They lived upon the farm of his father until 1882, making improvements, and adding lands. At the death of his aged parents, Joseph Reiner purchased the interests of the other heirs and then sold the old homestead to purchase the Stedman farm (Jackson Township) of 160 acres. Joseph Reiner established himself as one of the honored residents of English River Township for his faithful military service as well as being a good citizen. The children of Joseph and Mary Ann were: Charles, Emma, Elizabeth, Sylvester, Rozellia, Anthony, Antoinette, Alfred, Margaret, Bertha, and John. Later, daughter Margaret Reiner, would marry Oscar Bruce Robinson in 1912 and produce several children that married into the families of Young, Casner, and Myatt (Мијатовић or Mijatovic). Notes on Civil War: Joseph Reiner served as a Private in Company K, 30th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, as was wounded during the engagement at Cherokee Station, Alabama, 21 Oct 1863. During the action at Cherokee Station, Private Joseph Reiner was wounded in both legs (thigh) probably about the time his regiment, 30th Iowa, charged the enemy after their colonel fell. He was treated and evacuated from the field; later, he was sent to a General Hospital at Memphis where he was treated and later to St. Louis where he convalesced for several months before being discharged. After returning home, Private Reiner recovered somewhat and was fit enough to serve in Company G, 23rd Infantry Regiment, US Veteran Reserve Corps (i.e. Invalid Corps); re-designated as 61st Company, 2nd Battalion. Organized at Cincinnati, Ohio, September 26, 1863. Designation changed May 13, 1864. Mustered out by detachments August 24 to September 12, 1865.
