Description	:	Married Deborah Craig on 19 May 1839. He was a merchant and miller by trade. When it became known in 1828 that Hanover, Ohio was on the route of the Sandy and Beaver Canal, the little town added 5 additions between 1832 and 1835, and A. R. Arter and his brother, Joseph Richardson Arter, built a large canal warehouse between the canal and Canal Street. Max Gard and William H. Vodrey, Jr., C. 1952, John Taylor, Printer, Lisbon, Ohio: "Near the west end of the Big Tunnel, the workmen made a startling discovery. The bones of a Mastodon were found, imbedded in the rock. There was a broken tusk ten feet long, several teeth as bid as your two fists, and a molar tooth that weighed fourteen pounds and a bushel of other bones that made up one foot. In addition to this, many samples of prehistoric pottery and stone relics were found in the Big Tunnel. Some of the relics and bones were owned and displayed for years by Morris Miller, a canal contractor of Hanover. OTHERS WERE OWNED BY JOSEPH ARTER, son of the Treasurer of the Canal Company."
