Description	:	Son of Josiah Ryland and Catherine Peachy Ryland. Joseph married Priscilla Courtney Bagby 16 December 1835. Joseph Ryland of 'Marlborough' by May Murdoch Gwathmey, his granddaughter Joseph, next to the youngest of seven children of Josiah Ryland and Catherine [Peachey] his wife, was born at 'Farmington' November 3, 1813. At the age of 22 he married Priscilla Bagby, age 17, December 16, 1835, Rev. Robert Ryland, his brother, officiating. Read More	Son of Josiah Ryland and Catherine Peachy Ryland. Joseph married Priscilla Courtney Bagby 16 December 1835. Joseph Ryland of 'Marlborough' by May Murdoch Gwathmey, his granddaughter Joseph, next to the youngest of seven children of Josiah Ryland and Catherine [Peachey] his wife, was born at 'Farmington' November 3, 1813. At the age of 22 he married Priscilla Bagby, age 17, December 16, 1835, Rev. Robert Ryland, his brother, officiating. On a part of the original 'Farmington' estate a small frame building of five rooms and basement was erected. This was to be the home of Joseph and Priscilla -- 'Marlborough.' These were the days of slaves, so there were many at 'Marlborough', each having his separate duties, from the young to the old. There was Fannie, the housegirl; Winnie, the cook, Harriet and Peggy and Tom and Sam, and so on. On one occasion there were special guests, and for supper they served battercakes with the menu. These were brought in by Winnie's little daughter, all dressed up for the occasion. Finally she came with a plate steaming with lovely brown cakes and very audibly announced, "Mammy done scraped de tray." We may imagine the embarrassment of the hostess. When bedtime came, each girl in the home had her maid to come in with a piggin of water to bathe her feet, then to comb her hair and arrange her for bed, tucking her in for the night. Joseph owned a mill, a small frame building, at Walkerton, and often he would ride down to oversee the running of it. His riding horse, Bay Charlie, was the pride and admiration of the whole family. Once when he returned from a ride, as he jumped from the saddle he stuck his switch in the ground near the back door of the home. This took root and is now the lovely sugar maple tree near the back porch at 'Marlborough'. These rides must have been conducive to an appetite, for at supper he often ate as many as six soft-boiled eggs. The family was getting large now, and so the little house at 'Marlborough' must be added to; so three new rooms and large hall were built, with a furnace installed, the first of its kind in the country, and the rooms were papered. This paper is still on these walls, comparatively well preserved. Twenty-five years filled with happy days had passed, but war clouds were forming, and as they grew dark, Sue had to be called home from Albemarle Female Institute in Charlottesville, and Mary from Hollins Institute, and all was confusion. John and Josiah (Pat as familiarly known to his companions)were both enlisted in the King and Queen Artillery under Capt. [John] Bagby, John as Second Sergeant and Josiah as First Lieutenant. Joseph, at that time 48 years of age, was appointed to the Home Guard. On July 13, 1864, the youngest child, Harry Lee, was born, the thirteenth in the 'Marlborough' home. Soon after this, a friend asked Joseph how many children he had. His reply: "I have seven boys and each boy has six sisters -- calculate for yourself." During these war times, Cupid was not idle; Josiah and Lucy White were married February 25, 1864. Time forbids me telling of many hardships and trials endured on account of the cruel war. John W. was wounded at Seven Pines in 1862, and Josiah at Petersburg in 1864. Bay Charlie was taken off by the Yankees, and the mill at Walkerton was burned. This was rebuilt after the war and run by James Robert (Jim) and stands today. The days of Reconstruction were filled with joy as well as sorrow. Wedding bells were ringing again. John W., the oldest son, was married to Lucy Roane [Lucy Fleet Bagby]. Mary married Augustus Murdoch, a southern soldier of Maryland, and she was the first to leave Virginia soil. The children are leaving the nest fast now, for we have Nannie [Joanne Bagby Ryland]marrying C. B. [Christopher Bennett] Fleet and James Robert marrying Nannie Porter. One day, August 25, 1872, a message came to a little home nestled in the mountains of Maryland. The writer was only four years old then, and strange as it may seem, the sorrow and weeping of distressed and shocked Mother made an indelible impression upon her. Joseph Ryland was no more.
