Shadle was born in Indiana county, Pennsylvania, September 6, 1853 and died in Greene county, Iowa, February 25, 1910, aged 56 years, 5 months and 19 days. The cause of his death was pneumonia, he being sick one week. When a small boy his parents moved to Clinton county, Iowa, and several years later to Boone county, Iowa, where he has since resided. While a young man he became a member of the Methodist church and 26 years ago united with the Church of the Brethren. In his faith he remained steadfast. On April 4, 1880 he was united in marriage with Prudence E. Powers. To this union were born eight children, all surviving except Charles S., who preceded him eleven days. Those left to mourn are as follows: his aged mother, side companion, Harry W., Lafayette, Arthur E., Alfred, William f., Lester A., daughter, Prudence and one little grandson. His brothers and sisters follow: Geo. H., of Sac county, Iowa, Hiram H., of Boone, Iowa, Austin T. and Grant, of Ogden, Iowa, J. Calvin and Mrs. Sarah Van Pelt, of Beaver, Iowa. His father, four brothers and four sisters having preceded him. Brother Shadle has always been an active church and Sabbath school worker, he was one of the first superintendents of the Beaver Union Sabbath schools many years ago before there were any churches in this vicinity and the Sabbath school was held in the school house north of Beaver and later moved to the Brethren church. Brother Shadle perhaps had no idea when he assisted in organizing the Beaver Union Sabbath school so many years ago, and of which he has always been a regular attendant, that it would become one of the oldest schools in the county with a record of having influenced more people’s lives for good than any other institution in this vicinity. As a farmer he applied himself closely to his work and was quite successful, however, he was planning to build a splendid new home near Beaver and give the work over to his son. The funeral, the largest ever held in Beaver, was sad. Rev. Wise used for a text the 18th verse of the 20th chapter of 1st Samuel. Burial was in the family lot in Glenwood cemetery. Much needed sympathy is being extended to the family in their double bereavement for they feel very keenly the loss of both father and brother.
