Mr. Said was born 22 May 1896 in Mt. Clevan, Syria, in what is now Lebanon. He came to America in 1910. He enlisted in the U.S. Army 23 Apr 1911 after struggling to gain citizenship and to complete the necessary requirements despite the fact he spoke little English. Mr. Said was born 22 May 1896 in Mt. Clevan, Syria, in what is now Lebanon. He came to America in 1910. He enlisted in the U.S. Army 23 Apr 1911 after struggling to gain citizenship and to complete the necessary requirements despite the fact he spoke little English. He received his naturalization papers at Camp McClellan, AL. 29 May 1918. He was chosen by First Lt. M. J. ( Peachy ) Menefee as his orderly and went to France with the Headquarters Company, 116th Infantry, 29th Division. During fighting in the area near Verdun, Lt. Menefee was severely wounded and then Pvt. Said pulled him from the battlefield to save his life. For his act of heroism and other service, he received the American Distinguished Service Cross at Charleston, WV. from then Governor Hatfield. He was also honored with the French Croix de Guerre and several other war decorations. After his wartime service, he re-enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and spent 23 months in the West Indies. He came to Luray in the 1920's to visit Mr. Menefee, who later served many years as administrative assistant to the late Sen. Harry F. Byrd Sr. After his visit, he decided to open a shoe repair shop, which he continued to operate here until his final illness. In 1961, Mr. Said was presented the John Rhodes DAR Chapter's Americanism Medal, Mr. Menefee commented: As a personal aide to me during World War I and a true friend since that time, Joe Said's passing comes as a great loss and had it not been for the aid he rendered me at the time of my injury I probably would not have survived. He was a fine, courageous, loyal and patriotic soldier and a good citizen who ingratiated himself with all who knew him. "Joe will be missed by this community he loved so much and I will cherish his memory in my heart forever." Mr. Said was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Luray VFW and American Legion posts. He was also a Mason. He is survived by his wife, the former Lucille A. Miller, whom he married 25 Dec 1926. Also serving are a daughter, Mrs. Dick (Jeanette) Fox of Luray; and a granddaughter, Glennette Fox. Burial was in Beahm's Chapel Cemetery.
