Description	:	Joseph Smay was the son of Daniel Smay Sr. and Elizabeth Fleson. Joseph's parents were married October 23, 1806, in Washington County, Maryland. When the 1850 U.S. Census was taken, Joseph was living with his father, his stepmother Elizabeth Bower, and seven siblings in Lawrence, Marion, Indiana. When the 1850 U.S. Census was taken, Joseph was living with his father, his stepmother Elizabeth Bower, and seven siblings in Lawrence, Marion, Indiana. [Daniel Smay, Joseph's father, married Elizabeth Bower January 12, 1828, in Frederick County, Maryland.] At the time of the 1860 U.S. Census, Joseph made his home in Oakland, Schuyler, Illinois, where he resided with his wife and oldest two children, Emma and Margaret. By 1870, the family had moved to Sherman township, Story County, Iowa. He and Angeline had five children in the home. Joseph's brothers, Absolom Daniel Smay (21 Oct 1820-20 Mar 1902) and David Smay (30 Mar 1824-29 Jul 1888), also lived in Story County, Iowa. He married Angeline Rosemund Stodgell (born June 1830 in Indiana, and died aft 1910 in Milford township, Story, Iowa at the Story County Home) on November 4, 1852, in Marion, Indiana.
