Description	:	JOSEPH STAUFFER PASSES AWAY An old settler and highly respected citizen of this community passed away last Saturday, May 11th, when Joseph Stauffer laid down the cares of this life and his spirit took its flight to the world beyond. Mr. Stauffer, who at the time of his death was 82 years, 6 months, and 6 days old, was born at Altkirch, Elsass, Germany on November 5, 1824. Read More	JOSEPH STAUFFER PASSES AWAY An old settler and highly respected citizen of this community passed away last Saturday, May 11th, when Joseph Stauffer laid down the cares of this life and his spirit took its flight to the world beyond. Mr. Stauffer, who at the time of his death was 82 years, 6 months, and 6 days old, was born at Altkirch, Elsass, Germany on November 5, 1824. He was married in 1849 to Barbara Roth of Wilmendingen, Baden, Germany, and to them were born five sons and four daughters. The wife and three daughters preceded him to the spirit world, and there are left to mourn him, a brother, 5 sons, 1 daughter, 40 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren. Mr. Stauffer came to America in 1866, locating in McLean County, Illinois, and in 1878 moved to Seward County, settling on a farm west of Milford, where he resided until his death. He was a most faithful member of the Amish Mennonite Church for about 65 years, and after short services at the family home on Monday afternoon, the body was borne to the beautiful and commodious church built by the Amish people and their friends, and which is little more than a mile south of where Mr. Stauffer lived. There were short sermons delivered in both English and German by Bishop Schlegel and several preachers of the denomination, and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery adjacent to the church. For 27 years, Mr. Stauffer has labored among his people, reared a family to manhood and womanhood, has seen the first church erected here many years ago built over and constructed into an imposing and substantial edifice, and now in the shadows of its portals, the body has served its usefulness to its God and fellow man.
