Read More	Postville Herald, Thursday, April 30, 1931: Joseph Steel, Who Passed On Monday, Respected Pioneer Born in Galena, Ill., in 1849, Mr. Steel Had Resided Here Since 1856 It is with a sorrow in which the entire community shares that we are called upon to announce the death of one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, Joseph Steel, whose passing occurred at 7:30 Monday evening at the home of his son, J. W. Steele, in this city, his demise following a cerebral hemorrhage with which he was stricken on Saturday forenoon last. Death came to our old friend peacefully and surrounded by all of his children. Joseph Steel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank iSteele, was born near Galena, Ill., July 17, 1849. In the year 1856, as a lad of seven years, he came with his parents to Iowa, they purchasing a quarter section of landabout two miles east of Postville, and that same farm, with some additions of acreage has been continuously since and is today owned by the Steele family. On April 7, 1874, h e was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Ryan. At this time Mr. Steel rented the farm from his parents, and builded another home on it for them to occupy, and here both families continued to reside until the parents crossed over to the other shore. To this unon thirteen children were bom, five daughters and eight sons, six of whom survive, viz., Frank of Marengo, John of Nashua, James W. and Henry V. of Postville, Mrs. Margaret Blaser of Des Moines and Mrs. Regina Kane of Dubuque. Those who passed on before are Jos. A. Steele, Father Fred B. Steele, Mrs. Christena McNeil, Daniel C. Steele, and William, Kathryn and Mary, the latter three dying in infancy. The wife and mother passed away March 2, 1913. In 1916 Mr. Steel came to Postville to make his home with his son, J. W. Steele, and family, and where he continued to reside until the end. Aside from the children above named Mr. Steel is survived by 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The above is in brief the life story of a man whose life for three-quarters of a century was an open book to the people of this city and community and who numbered his friends by those who came w;thin the circle of his wide acquaintance. No more honorable, upright and universally respected man was ever resident here. He was industrious, he was honest, he was kind; he bore no malice toward anyone, and it has been frequently remarked since his demise that he was one man of whom they could truthfully say they never heard him say one unk.nd word concerning his fellow man; and he died as he had lived at peace with his God and with all mankind. He was an obedient son, a devoted husband, a kind and indulgent husband and father; worshipped by his family and admired by all who knew him for his sterling manly qualities of head and heart. Nothing that we could say would add to t h e high place this fine christian gentleman held in the hearts of all who knew him, and with countless friends we sympathize with those who mourn and sorrow that he is no more. The funeral was held fiom St. Bridget's Catholic church in this city at 9:30 Wednesday morning, Rev. P. Biogan saying requiem high mass, and being assisted by Rev. M . J. Hogan of Greene and Rev. Thiltgen of Ossian. Interment was made in the family plot in the Catholic cemetery in Clermont. Six of his grandchildren officated as pall bearers—Edward Steele, Harry Steele, Richard Steele, Joseph B. Steele, Daniel J. McNeil and Daniel J. Steele. Out of town relatives in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Steele and son Richard of Nashua; Mr. and Mrs. Frank: Steele and sons Harry and Edward of Marengo, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Kane and family of Dubuque, Mrs. F.J. Blaser of Des Moines, Mrs. Dan Steele and sons Daniel and Don of Waukon, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Steele of Oelwein, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Delaney of Cedar Rapids, J. J. Thill of Dubuque, Frank Tliill of East Dubuque.
