Joseph Townsend, son of DeBruce and Abigail Townsend was born August 2, 1877 in a log cabin in Delaware County, New York State. His early years were spent in that state. He died on Wednesday, February 14, 1968 at the Howard County Community Hospital at the age of 90 years. In the spring of 1881, the family, consisting of his parents, one brother and one sister, emigrated to Cairo, Hall County, Nebraska, where they resided for a year. They then moved by team and wagon to Greeley County where they homesteaded and made their first home, which was a dug-out. Many difficult pioneer experiences followed. Joe attended school at District No. 15 in Greeley County. On January 1, 1900 he was united in marriage to Dagmar E. Larson at Brayton. Two children were born to this union, a son, John DeBruce of Houston, Texas and a daughter, who died in infancy. On March 14, 1905 occurred the death of his wife, Dagmar. On June 4, 1906 he was married to Viola Mae Holt at the Chris Anderson home in Greeley County. To this union five daughters and a son were born: Viola Pedersen, now deceased, Grace Pedersen, Alice Robinson, Clara Christensen, Pearl Pedersen and Joseph Clyde Townsend. Viola Mae, his wife, died in August of 1965. He later married Mrs. Emma Oakeson on December 18, 1965. She died in January of 1967. Joe’s entire life after coming to Nebraska was spent in Greeley and Howard Counties. He was a farmer and also did much carpenter and mason work. His hobbies were music, reading and visiting. He organized an orchestra consisting of his children and himself which gave much pleasure to his family and his friends, all of whom will miss him, but will remember with pleasure his friendly and wholesome attitude. Preceding him in death besides his wives were his parents, a sister, Mrs. Annie Belle Mallory, a brother, Andrew, a half-brother, Paul Anderson and a granddaughter Janiece Pedersen. Surviving are his four daughters, two sons, 25 grandchildren and a large number of great-grandchildren, two half-sisters, Miss Ella Anderson of Wolbach and Mrs. Mary Nelson of St. Paul, a large number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and a host of friends who loved him and cherish his memory.
