Joseph Bates died at his home in the evening of July 16, 1896. The last lingering traces of that day's shone dimly as the Silent Reaper deprived a home of a kind husband and loving father. Settling one and one-half miles southeast of the town of Cairo, his life is the reflection of the highest type of citizenship springing from early adversities of youth and the pioneer days. He was born in Clark County, Ohio, May 25th, 1815. His mother dying when he was quite young, he found a home as a member of a large family, with John Marshall, then a resident of Clark County, who afterwards settled in Marshall township, where they lived neighbors until the latter's death which occurred some years ago. In March, 1844, Mr. Bates was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Tindall, and five years later, came here and settled on the old home place, where he lived until his death. Here, by close application for a half century, striving with the adversities of pioneer days yet with unceasing toil, he with his faithful wife reared a family of 11 children and carved out of the rude prairies a large and productive farm, the location and improvements of which remain a monument to his industry, energy and toil. Almost on the identical site, surrounded by the fruits of his labors, his beloved wife and children he said: Good-by proud world, I am going home, Thou art not my friend and I am not thine. Joseph Bates was a man of decided character, reserved, yet a lover of associates. He was honest, conscientious and truthful to a fault with his family, friends and neighbors, always commodious to grant favors, never allowing his left hand to know shat his right hand dealt. His fondness for children implied his charitable disposition. Good cheer always accompanied his regular visits when his health permitted to his closest neighbors . He was known for miles around as "Uncle Joe". He never forgot a kindness --was a man of pure heart and a week day Christian. He never united with any denomination, but attended church regularly. The blessings bestowed upon him through life were only the returns of kind acts shown toward others. A wife, six sons and four daughters mourn his loss. All the children were born on the old home place except two, Charles Bates who is now residing near the homestead, and Mrs. J.A. Leamon of this place. Three other sons, Howard, James and Curtis, and one daughter, Mrs. Leslie Nichols, with their families, reside within the sound of their mother's voice. Joseph Bates, Jr. Resided at home at the time of his father's death. Mrs. Laura Paris is now living in Port Louisa Township, of this county. Mr. Emma Baldrige is living at Lajunta, Colo., and Robert Bates, another son is now residing in New Windwor, Colo. Mrs. Alice Smith, whose demise occurred at her home in Kearney,Neb., some 18 months ago, completed the circle that surrounded the once happy preside of our deceased friend. The venerable and distinguished Dr. Campbell, former pastor of the Oakland church, conducted the services,where the deceased was a constant attendant. Great respect was shown the deceased by the large number of friends and relatives present. The remains were laid to rest in the Oakland cemetery.
