Read More	Howells Mourns Sudden Death of Fine Young Man ...Killed By Baseball From the date of his birth on March 1, 1925 to July 2, 1950, is the record of the earthly journey of Joseph Wencil Fiala, a son of Joseph P. and Bertha (Stangel) Fiala. In the full vigor of his young manhood Joseph left here Sunday for Nickerson to play ball as 2nd baseman on the Howells team. While the boys were warming up for the game he was the next man up at batting practice. As he leaned over to pick up a bat, a foul ball struck him on the side of the head. Saying, "I'm hit," he collapsed and sank to the ground. Someone brought some water but he objected with the remark that he was going to play ball. His companions however realized his condition might be serious and he was hurried to the hospital at Fremont. From there he was taken to Omaha, but died before reaching the city, a little after nine o'clock. Outstanding Citizen By his death, Howells has lost a fine outstanding young man, prudent, resourceful and honest. Courage and hope rather than fear and despair characterized his attitude toward life. Temperate in his personal conduct and habits, he led an active life to the very close for he was an optimist with unfaltering faith in the future. He lived his life to the full and bright, cheery, kind and cordial he leaves a host of friends to deeply mourn his passing and when his soul passed to its creator it ended the earthly career of a fine Christian young man. Joseph was a Howells boy--born here, he began his education in SS. Peter and Paul's school, was a graduate of the Howells public schools in 1942, joined the U. S. Colors on the 16th of June. This is just the beginning of a lengthy article which appeared in the Howells Journal, July 6, 1950, page 1.
