He was born October 17, 1931, at Burlingame, the son of James and Neill Mitchell McFarlane. He grew up in Burlingame, and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1949. He was born October 17, 1931, at Burlingame, the son of James and Neill Mitchell McFarlane. He grew up in Burlingame, and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1949. Joe served as a Sergeant in the United States Army in Korea from 1952 until 1954. He worked for the Santa Fe Railway System prior to his employment at the Topeka Veterans Administration Hospital, where he retired after 28 years of service. He later owned and operated JB's Swap and Shop at Burlingame. He was a member of the Burlingame Federated Church, and the American Legion Post No. 5, Emporia, Kansas. Joe served on the Burlingame City Council and the Burlingame School Board. He was instrumental in the organization of the Burlingame Baseball Association, where a ball field is named after him. He also supervised construction of the basketball courts in Burlingame Sumner Park. Joe married Bessie Meyers, September 14, 1951, at the Burlingame Federated Church. She survives at the home. Other survivors include a son, Jeff (Pam) McFarlane, Burlingame, KS; two daughters, Kathy Poe, Norwich, KS, and Cindy (Kevin) Harris, Burlingame, KS; a brother, Hugh McFarlane, Burlingame, KS; eight grandchildren, Josey (Christina), Jacob, and Kelsie McFarlane, Molly and Noel Poe, and Andy, Danny and Kyle Harris; two great granddaughters, McKenna and Madison McFarlane. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim McFarlane. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 20, 2010, at the Burlingame Federated Church. Burial will be in Burlingame Cemetery where military graveside services will be provided by an Army Honor Guard. He will lie in state from noon until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, at Carey Funeral Home, Burlingame, where family visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Burlingame Federated Church, the Burlingame First Responders or the Burlingame Recreation Association, and sent c/o the funeral home, P.O.
