Read More	Highland Recorder August 20, 1909 The subject of this sketch, Joseph William Blagg, was born at Doe Hill. Va., June 5, 1855. Ho was the oldest son of Samuel H. & Margaret T. Blagg, the former having died in Nov., '62 of the dreaded disease smallpox, leaving a widow and three children, age three, five & seven, respectively to fight the battles of life alone. Yet through the providence of God & the determined effort of a noble mother, this little band was kept together until the two boys Joseph & John, were old enough to come to her relief. At the age of twenty Joseph was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Price, daughter of the late Townsend Price, formerly of this county. To this union were born ten children, all of whom survive him except Mrs. Edward Malcomb, who preceded him to the grave one year & five months. Some eight months ago. Mr. Blagg sold his property near Doe Hill and moved to the Monterey valley where he purchased the property known as the Jack place & formerly owned by the late Cyrus Fleisher. He also purchased the Hamilton place in Big Valley. Being a man of zeal and untiring energy, he set about to establishing himself in his new home, when the hand of affliction was heavily laid upon him and for seven weeks he suffered the most severe pain & torture. At the time he was stricken down he was not a member of any particular branch of the church, but during his illness he professed a saving faith in the Lord. All was done that could be done by a faithful physician, kind friends & neighbors, of whom he had made not a few during his short sojourn among them. When the end came, August 5, the sun was sinking, kissing the hilltops & shedding its last ray of light over all nature, his spirted passed into a rest from all cares in this world to join kindred spirits in that blessed land beyond the river. How sweet to know that at evening time it shall be light. His body was laid to rest in the Monterey cemetery on Saturday August 7, in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relative. Funeral services was conducted by Rev. Potter, of the M. E. Church South & Rev. Moffett, of the Presbyterian church. Deceased leaves a widow & nine children, four boys & five girls nine grand children, one sister an one brother, all of whom reside in this county and were present but one daughter, Mrs. Berlin Fleisher and two children of Coles County Illinois & one sister, Mrs. David Fornash, of Raymondville, Mo.
