Joseph and Margaret (McPhail) had 4 daughters: Mary Maria Wilton born 27 January 1890 Hazel Margareta Wilton born 21 July 1892 Gladys Wilton born 25 June 1894 Winnis Wilton born 8 May 1896. According to the 1851 Census of Canada (taken in 1852) Joseph was employed as a farm labourer for John Toles in Southwold, Elgin County, Ontario. By the taking of the 1861 Census, Joseph was employed as a Stove Pedlar in Warwick, Lambton County, Ontario. The 1871 Census records Joseph as farming and owing property Lot 12, Concession 8, NW ¼ Lot 18, Concession 8, and NE ¼ Lot 18, Concession 9, Aldborough, Elgin County, Ontario. The 1901 Census lists Joseph as a Hotel Keeper at West Lorne, Ontario. Joseph died at West Lorne, Ontario. The cause of death listed on the death register was apoplexy. ———— ———— ———— ———— Obituary Transcript - taken from The Dutton Advance Newspaper of September 2, 1909 The death took place at West Lorne on Monday of Mr. Joseph Wilton, Joseph was employed as a farm labourer for a well-known resident of that village, after an extended illness. The deceased was 76 years of age, and resided for many years in the village and vicinity. He was born in England and came to Canada with his parents in 1835 and settled in Yarmouth. In 1865 he went to Aldborough and engaged in farming and also built a hotel on the site of the present Commercial House. This he afterwards disposed of and moved on his farm. Ten years ago he sold his farm and rented the Argyle House, which he conduted for two years. He then purchased a farm in Dunwich, west of Dutton, which he disposed of after four years, and purchased the Commercial House, which he has since conducted. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his wife, a family of four daughters: Mary, Winnis, Hazel and Gladys, all at home. He is also survived by two brothers: William, of West Lorne, and George, of Idaho; and three sisters: Mrs. Mary Mills, St. Thomas; Mrs. David, Cleveland, and Mrs. Sarah Lynch, of Carsonville, Mich. The funeral took place yesterday to the Gillies cemetery.
