He enlised in 1862 in the Federal Army, One Hundred and Nineteenth Illinois infantry, Company K, with the rank of sergeant. Joseph and Nancy were farmers and merchants. They managed one of the first businesses in Waco. Located in a rail boxcar. They were members of the Medodist church. Their final years were spent on a farm in section 31 of Waco township. Joseph was joined later in Waco by his brother Caleb Strickler (20 Nov 1847-22 Feb 1925) whose wife Julia A Bennett bore him 5 children; Lucy, Edith, Charles, Elmer and Mary.
