Josephine Agnes Graves was born on October 22, 1911 in Waterloo, Iowa, the only child of Nick & Zella (Jenkins) Graves. The family moved to a farm in the Aurora/Lamont area. Josephine attended Lamont School, graduating in 1930. She was May Queen in her senior year and played saxophone in the school band. She was awarded a scholarship to the Oelwein Business College. After college, she was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company in Waterloo. On June 18, 1934 she was united in marriage to Gilbert Joseph Schrader of Maynard at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont. They farmed southeast of Maynard until 1947 when they moved to Maynard. In 1952 they purchased the Farm Service Station. Josephine pumped gas and kept the books until the business was sold. She was involved in many community activities. In 1967 they moved to a farm west of Maynard to take care of Josephine’s father. Josephine was employed by the Credit Bureau of Fayette County from 1967 to 1973. Her husband, Gilbert, passed away in September of 1971. Josephine moved to Oelwein with her father in 1980. In 1997 she moved to the Mealey Apartments. Josephine was a resident of Grandview Care Center from 2000 to 2009 and then she moved to Mercy Living Plus. She enjoyed music, baking, fishing, working in the garden and taking family pictures. Josephine was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Rita #321. Josephine is survived by her Daughter: Darlene (Donald) Taylor of Oelwein; 4 Grandchildren: Lynne Evans of Altoona, Duane (Kate) Taylor of Maynard, Mike (Lori) Taylor of North Liberty and Mark (Erica) Taylor of Cedar Rapids; 10 Great Grandchildren & 2 Great Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
