Description	:	She was the youngest of the 85 known grandchildren of William Minteer and Mary Nicholson, and was fifty years younger than her oldest first cousin. She grew up at a time when family and stories about family were the primary sources of entertainment, and happily for all of us in the family, she had an excellent memory. She grew up at a time when family and stories about family were the primary sources of entertainment, and happily for all of us in the family, she had an excellent memory. After her husband died she decided it would be important to put many of her memories into book form, and by 1955 she had begun writing many of the brief Bios that would later appear in the book. In 1961 200 copies were printed at her expense and offered for sale to interested family members. By February 1963 she had fewer than 30 left, and it must be assumed that nearly all of them made their way into the hands of interested family members. Here's what she wrote about herself in her book: "Josephine Minteer - I was born in Craigsville on April 11, 1877, and was married June 26, 1912, to Robert Peet Dickinson. My brother, John, was twenty-two when I was born. They said he picked me up and kissed me before I was one hour old. Eva was like another mother to me so I always felt wanted and loved, even if I did come late. Father died the following February, and Dr. Maxwell told mother at that time that the baby would not live a month. (Doctors do make mistakes because here I am today at 83 and still going strong!) Migraine headaches, hives, poor appetite, etc., were my lot until I began wearing glasses in high school. Since that time I have had perfect health. In fact, at my last check-up, Dr Grubbs said, "I don't think you will live to be much over one hundred!" As I was growing up in Worthington, I was included with the older group in all of their social affairs. My high ideals led my brother, Wint, to say once, "Jo, you don't want a man, you want an angel." This statement followed a discussion we were having one day while I reviewed the eligible boy situation. These convictions kept me from rushing into any early romance. By the time I finished high school in Butler, my sister, Nora was married and mother and I were living alone. I taught one year in a one-room country school near Craigsville and then went to Clarion State Teacher's College. On graduation in 1900 I taught one year at Frank, Allegheny County, in a four-room school and then went to Butler where I taught for eleven years. We built a nice house near the Younkins' home in Butler. All was so congenial both at home and at school that I had little interest in changing things by being married. Robert Peet Dickinson came into my life at this time and every one of us was attracted to him because of his courteousness, his sense of humor and his fine family background. Mother had rented a room to him in our new house, but I had no romantic thoughts about him because he was younger than I. He was just one of the family! Gradually as my family and best friends kept talking about how wonderful he was, I began to realize how I would miss him if he ever went out of my life. Following our hearts instead of convention as to which should be the older, we were married in June 1912, and lived happily ever after!" ------------------- In 1880 she and her mother and five siblings lived on a farm in Craigsville, PA. In 1910 she and her mother lived in a house at 165 Brady Street (now 627 East Brady Street) in Butler, PA. They owned their home, mortgage free. She worked as a teacher in a public school. In 1920 she and her husband and their two children lived in a house at 219 Meade Street in Wilkinsburg, PA. They owned their home, mortgage free. He worked as an electrical engineer for Westinghouse. In 1930 the four of them lived in the same place. Their home was valued at $5500, and they had a radio. Robert worked as a foreman at a radiator company, and she was back to teaching in a public school. In 1940 they all still lived there, and their home was valued at $5000. Also living with them was Robert's sister Alice and a lodger, 27-year-old Adeline Nuss. She was a stenographer for a motor manufacturer, with an income in 1939 of $1560 for 50 weeks of work. Her husband and both of their children all worked all 52 weeks in 1939 at the radiator manufacturer. Robert, Sr. was a superintendent, with an income of $1900; Robert, Jr. was a shipper, with an income of $1300; and Josephine was a purchase secretary, with an income of $660.
