JOSEPHINE ALLEN - Josephine DeLawyer, daughter of John and Maria DeLawyer, was born in Story county, Iowa, February 22, 1857, and departed this life on October 28, 1933, age 76 years, eight months and six days. She was married to Samuel H. Allen on January 12, 1873, and at the time of her death she had lived on the home farm, south of Elwell, for the past 57 years. JOSEPHINE ALLEN - Josephine DeLawyer, daughter of John and Maria DeLawyer, was born in Story county, Iowa, February 22, 1857, and departed this life on October 28, 1933, age 76 years, eight months and six days. She was married to Samuel H. Allen on January 12, 1873, and at the time of her death she had lived on the home farm, south of Elwell, for the past 57 years. Her husband passed away on September 4, 1908. Her last illness dated back to the early part of last summer and she suffered a number of paralytic strokes in the meantime, which rendered her helpless toward the end of her life. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive her demise. Those living are: John M., of Des Moines; Charles W., of Maxwell; Mrs. Etta Hainline, of Polk City; Mrs. Ida M. Hubbard, of Maxwell; Marshall H., of Grand Junction; and Mrs. Josephine M. Faulkner, of Valley Junction. Leonard E., died in infancy, and Walter H. died March 14, 1933. She also leaves seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was converted to God some 45 years since in a special revival meeting conducted by Dr. D. J. Bunce, formerly of Nevada, and united with the Mt. Zion Evangelical church, and has been a faithful member of the same since that time. When the Elwell church was built she transferred her membership there and was one of the charter members of that organization, and faithful in attendance and support as long as her health and strength permitted the same. She was a good mother to her children, and in the 25 years that have passed since her husband's death, has kept the home fires burning as best she could and succeeded in doing so. She was a kind neighbor and a true friend to those who knew her. "MOTHER- Mother Dear, the life you lived here is over, Your work on earth is done; You were tired, worn and weary And could not wait to greet the morning sun. God called and you obeyed the summons. Your soul took a beautiful flight To the city of peace and joy and contentment so fair; No pain, suffering or sorrow Will mar your happiness there. The tired hands that guided us on life's pathway Are resting so peaceful today; You traveled the rugged path of life's highway so bravely, Never faltering once by the way; Knowing God would guide you safely Over to that city so fair Where all is peace and rejoicing, Meeting your loved ones there. So today, Dear Mother, we pay tribute To one we loved so well; Though our eyes with tears are blinded And it seems our hears will break, Sleep on, Dear Mother, we would not wake you From your peaceful rest; You are in His care and keeping, Thy will be done and God knows best." - Mrs. C. W. Jenkins. The funeral services were held in the Elwell church Monday at 2:30 p. m., conducted by Rev. Charles Pickford, of Nevada, a former pastor, and a long time friend of the family, and interment was made in the Center Grove cemetery.
