Mary Josephine "Jo" (Bruns) Faulhaber was born on October 29, 1916 in Plankinton, SD to Theodore and Mary (Mercher) Bruns. She grew up in the Plankinton area and attended rural schools there. Jo graduated from Plankinton High School in 1933 at the age of 17 and went on to continue her education at college in Sioux Falls, Wessington Springs, Chamberlain and Aberdeen, SD. After graduating, she began teaching school in Bristol Township in 1934 at the age of 18. Jo was united in marriage to Lester Carl Faulhaber at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo, Wyoming on February 21, 1941. Les worked for a rancher in Montana until 1948 when they moved to South Dakota to farm with his father. She taught school for several years, stopping to help on the farm and raise their children. Around 1954, she resumed teaching for several years and continued her career as a substitute teacher in the Plankinton School System until the age of 84. Until becoming a resident of the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in 2007, Jo was an especially active lady in the community of Plankinton. A very involved member of St. John's Catholic Parish, she taught religion classes for many years and was an active member of The Catholic Daughters of America. She belonged to the Jolly Bunch Club, the Birthday Club, bowled for many years and spent countless hours mending and altering clothing for her friends. She created quilts for her grandchildren and enjoyed doing all forms of fancy work as well as playing cards. Jo was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother to her family. She always had the cookie jar full of homemade chocolate chips cookies. She loved to raise a garden and share the produce, along with the fruit from trees in her yard. She loved working in her yard and would spend hours digging out the dandelions. Grateful for having shared in Jo's life: her 3 children: Audrey (Jim) Schroeder of Sturgis, SD, Richard "Dick" (Vickey) Faulhaber of Plankinton, SD and Rodney (Teresa) Faulhaber of Wessington Springs, SD; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a brother, Terrance Bruns of Plainview, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Waiting to greet her in Heaven is: her husband of 54 years, Les (Oct. 19, 1995); her son, Bob; her parents; 4 brothers; 1 sister; and many other relatives and friends.
