Josephine Letitia Atkisson was born in Xenia, Kansas on March 7, 1857 and died at the St. Johns hospital in Iola, Kansas on March 2, 1923, aged 65 years, 11 months and 25 day. Xenia, the place of her birth and happy girlhood days, is the most picturesque place in eastern Kansas and rivals in natural beauty the far-famed Ozarks of Missouri. Amid such scenes, we may expect to find this life developing into a character of serene strength and beauty. She crossed the plains in a wagon train at seven year of age, when at Ft. Bridger, Wyo., her mother died and was buried in The National Cemetery. The father united in marriage again when she was twelve years of age. She was the oldest of eleven children, of which four brothers and five sisters are still living. In her fifteenth year, she yielded her life to Jesus Christ and was baptized into the fellowship of the Christian church. On February 7, 1875, she was united in marriage to J. W. Tennyson at Xenia, Kans. They lived on the Tennyson home place near Uniontown where their eight children were born, three of whom died in infancy. The other five are: Mrs. Delta Morris, Iola, Kansas; Mrs. Gertrude Sutton, Stacey, Mont.; Mrs. Katherine White, Fowler, Colo.; Mr. J. Frazier Tennyson, Ranger, Tex., and Mrs. Cora Miller of Uniontown, Kansas. She also has ten grandchildren. The children were all at her bedside except the daughter living in Colorado who was unable to be here. Ten years ago the Tennyson family moved to Iola, and very soon Mrs. Tennyson found a large place in the good work of the various organizations of the city. She gave the holy energy to the W. C. T. U. and was at the time of her death the Evangelistic Superintendent of Allen county. She transferred her membership to the First Baptist church of Iola. Her splendid Christian service has done much to deepen the spiritual life in the many who were fortunate enough to share in her fellowship and prayers. In the order of the Eastern Star, where she has served so long as chaplain, she broke with forms of the ritual, and came to the rich throne of Grace with great and simple eloquence in prevailing prayer, until all hearts felt the refreshing dew of His Grace falling richly upon them. She was a woman full of the Holy Spirit; and so constant was that endowment that no one ever heard her pray a cold formal prayer. Hers were always in a living glowing faith. These her loved ones, together with a large circle of us who are held by the fraternal ties of church and Chapter, will ever hold as a great blessing from God that such a pure and beautiful life has touched our's with its blessings. The funeral services were held in Unity church on Sunday, March 4th, with the Rev. B. W. Wiseman officiating. Burial was made in the country grave yard south of the church on the Tennyson farm. The funeral was largely attended. The many beautiful floral offerings from sorrowing relatives and friends, among them being special pieces from the T. C. T. U., O. E. S., and the Dorcus Sunday School class of which she was the teacher, attested to the esteem in which they held her. --B. W. Wiseman
