Josephine Cunningham Huppert was born June 16, 1928 to Helen Josephine and Thomas George Cunningham in Great Falls. Her parents were proud immigrants from Northern Ireland. In 1930, Jo and her parents moved to Miles City, where her two sisters, Eileen and Kit were born. Jo attended grade school and high school at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Her lifelong love for singing in the choir began in 1st grade. Always proud of her Irish heritage, Jo liked to reminisce about “Dancing to everything Irish in Miles City and her mother made the costumes and played the piano!” She attended the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minn., for two years. Homesick, she moved back to Miles City, where she met Fred Huppert. After courting for a year they were married on Jo’s birthday, June 16, 1952. Soon after they moved to Billings, where they raised their six children and lived the remainder of their lives. Jo was a charter member of Saint Pius X and dedicated much of her life to serving the parish. Jo was a daily mass devotee and she was involved in both the Charismatic and Cursillo movements. She was extremely active and held every office in the Counsel of Catholic Women, she was also a charter member of Saint Jude Counsel. Her liturgical ministry rolls included Lecturer, Eucharistic Minister and of course singing in the choir. Jo was on Pastoral Council for three years as well as serving three years on the Billings Central School Board. In addition to parish ministry she helped with Mayfair Foundation raising funds for Catholic schools in Billings for 40 years. For 17 years Jo was faithfully devoted to Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 1:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. twice a week. Jo also volunteered in the broader community of Billings and especially loved greeting guests who came to visit the Moss Mansion. She also worked for several years as a volunteer fundraiser for March of Dimes. Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Fred. Jo is survived by her two sisters; Eileen Harbaugh, of Shepherd, and Kathleen Hagg of Waseca, Minn., and Jo and Fred had six children, 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Mary Jo (Kay) Gabiola, of Emmett, Idaho, and their two sons: Vance (Connie) Gabiola and their children Andrew; Zach, Madison, Natalie; and Kasen. Mike (Sandy) Gabiola. Fred (Darcie) Huppert of Billings and their five children, JayDee (Honza) Vykoukal, Ryan, Quinn, Torry, and Brayden. Greg Huppert, of Billings; Celeen Woodbury on Whidbey Island, Wash., and her children David and Alyssa; Nancy Huppert of Billings and her son Matthew; and Kevin (Patty) Huppert, of Billings and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Sept. 25 at St. Pius Church.
