The information given here is a compilation of records and family notes in my possession, one of which is "The Meyer-Kuntz Family Tree" family biography which can be found at the Bruce County Museum and Archives in Southampton, Ontario. Marie Josephine Goetz was born in Alsace, France which was under German rule at the time. Various records say it was Strasbourg, Colmar, or Soufflenheim in Alsace, Bas-Rhin, France. Marie Josephine Goetz was born in Alsace, France which was under German rule at the time. Various records say it was Strasbourg, Colmar, or Soufflenheim in Alsace, Bas-Rhin, France. She was the daughter of Adelaide Ruff (Russ?) and Michaelis Goetz. It is said she came to the United States alone, worked in New York for awhile, then came to Waterloo County and worked in Zurich, New Germany until she met Martinus. Martinus married Marie Josephine Goetz in St. Agatha's R.C. Church, in Waterloo County, on August 25, 1848. Both Martin and his wife made their journey, on foot, from Guelph to their home near Formosa, Ontario. Together they erected their home and barn from the bush area around there. They raised a family of eleven children. There were seven boys and four girls. Their children were Mary Anne (Lawrence Joseph Schnurr), Martinus J. Jr. (Marianna Tschirhart), Ludwig Louis (Catherine Seitz), Caroline (Martin Drumm), Joseph Anthony (Catherine Beingessner), Ferdinand Bernhard (Emelia Seitz), Josephine (Anthony Obermeyer), John (never married), Adeline/Adelaide (Joseph Seifreid), Laurence (never married) and Andrew Martin (Martina Batte.) The farm on which they resided was later owned by Leonard Weiler - Lot #20 Concession A, Culross Township at R.R. #2 Mildmay, Ontario. They built and lived in a small house on a corner of that same farm when Martin died at the age of 88 years and 7 months. After his death, Josephine lived there for a number of years. Then she went to live with her daughter until her death in 1918. They are both buried in the Formosa Cemetery. Obituary: Mildmay Gazette February 14, 1918 Formosa: On Saturday evening the death of Mrs. Josephine Meyer, relict of the late Martin Meyer Sr., took place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anthony Obermeyer in the village at the age of 91 years. The (funeral) took place on Tuesday and was largely attended.
