Description	:	Josephine Waggoner was born at her grandmother's camp near the Grand River Agency, Dakota Territory. Her father, Charles H. McCarthy, drowned two years later while on duty as the sheriff of Burleigh County. Her mother, Itatewin (or Wind Woman) left behind McCarthy's savings and property and took the infant Josephine and her half sister Marcella (Arnold) to her people on the Standing Rock Reservation. Read More	Josephine Waggoner was born at her grandmother's camp near the Grand River Agency, Dakota Territory. Her father, Charles H. McCarthy, drowned two years later while on duty as the sheriff of Burleigh County. Her mother, Itatewin (or Wind Woman) left behind McCarthy's savings and property and took the infant Josephine and her half sister Marcella (Arnold) to her people on the Standing Rock Reservation. Waggoner was educated at Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia, and settled back at the reservation in 1888 at the age of 16. While working at the Congregational mission hospital near Fort Yates, she met a white soldier, Pvt. John Franklin Waggoner. The two were married on Thanksgiving Day, 1889. Throughout the next year, educated Josephine was called upon by Hunkpapa chiefs, including Sitting Bull, to read the letters they received from the Pine Ridge Reservation concerning the spreading Ghost Dance movement. In December, during the arrest of Sitting Bull, he was killed, and Josephine was called upon to help lay out the great leader's body. After a few years at Fort Yates, John Waggoner left the army and the couple set up ranching on Four-Mile Creek near Keldron, South Dakota. Although her life was very hard, she found time to paint and write poetry and stories. Josephine was instrumental in the compilation and publication of the book, "Rekindling Campfires", a biography of her mother's first husband and Josephine's friend, Ben Arnold Connor. Josephine was a prolific writer, despite hardships and complications in her life, and upon her death left a great amount of historical information for the benefit of generations to come.
