Description	:	SHAW, Miss Josephine Morris, 92, of South Hill, died Thursday, July 3, 2008 in the W.S. Hundley Annex. Josephine was born and raised in the Bracey area. She was a 1933 graduate of the LaCrosse High School. She moved to South Hill in 1935 and went to work for the South Hill Ribbon Mill, which would later become Burlington Industries. After a brief... Read More	SHAW, Miss Josephine Morris, 92, of South Hill, died Thursday, July 3, 2008 in the W.S. Hundley Annex. Josephine was born and raised in the Bracey area. She was a 1933 graduate of the LaCrosse High School. She moved to South Hill in 1935 and went to work for the South Hill Ribbon Mill, which would later become Burlington Industries. Miss Shaw left the mill to go to work for the Virginia Telephone and Telegraph Co. in 1943 as a local operator and 37 years later would retire in 1980 as a customer services representative for Centel. After a brief retirement of three years, which included taking classes at the Southside Va. Community College and working at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home, Miss Shaw decided to return to work full time as a receptionist at the South Hill Chamber of Commerce. This career move came with a very unusual twist, she would work five days a week every week as a volunteer with no pay for her services which would grow into bookkeeper, check writer, office manager and any and every other task that was sent her way. Miss Shaw spent over 21 years or approximately 44,000 hours as a volunteer and only asked for 1-2 days off per year. A feat that very few paid employees could ever boast about. Miss Shaw was an active member of the South Hill United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for many years and on the Administrative of the church. She was very proud to be a member of the Community Memorial Healthcenter Auxiliary since 1968 with many thousands of hours of volunteer service especially in the gift shop at the hospital. Other organizations that benefited from Josephine Shaw as a member include: American Lung Association, Mecklenburg County Cancer Society, South Hill Business and Professional Women's Club, where she was awarded the honor of "Woman of the Year" in 1978, The Friends of Prestwould, the Southside S.P.C.A., and the Friends of Mecklenburg County Animals, the South Hill Performing Arts, Mecklenburg Chapter of the American Heart Association, the Friends of the R. T. Arnold Library and the South Hill Woman's Club. In 1988 Miss Shaw was recognized by the Lake Country Area Agency on Aging as the "Volunteer of the Year" and was recognized by the South Hill Chamber of Commerce with a plaque declaring Josephine Shaw as the World's Greatest Volunteer. Miss Shaw was the first ever recipient as Honorary Lifetime Member of the South Hill Chamber of Commerce. A grand lady known for her lovely hats, Josephine Shaw once said that "her hobby was working and her real passion in life was volunteering and giving to others". Miss Shaw impacted the town of South Hill and everyone she met with that smile on her face and twinkle in her eye. She will be missed by her many friends who were blessed to know and love her. There were no immediate survivors. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
